By Breaking Belize News Staff: A family dispute over a missing social security card has resulted in a wounding conviction and a hefty fine for a Belize City man.

Benjamin Hyde Jr., 30, an LIU worker of West Canal Street, appeared unrepresented before Magistrate Mannon Dennison on Monday, where he pleaded guilty to wounding his sister during an argument on Friday, November 14, 2025.

According to police, the altercation began when Hyde Jr. became angry after accusing his sister of failing to locate his social security card. He slapped her across the face, causing a cut to her lower lip. A doctor later classified the injury as wounding.

Hyde Jr. accepted responsibility for the assault in court. Magistrate Dennison fined him $1,200 plus $5 court costs, payable by March 31, 2026. In default, he will serve eight months in prison.

The victim, a waitress, reported the incident to Precinct 1 Police, stating that she was in the kitchen listening to music when her cousin informed her that Hyde Jr. had been calling her. Moments later, he confronted her and delivered the slap that caused the injury.

While Hyde Jr. had a prior wounding conviction from 2011, the court did not consider it in sentencing because he was only 16 years old at the time.
