By Breaking Belize News Staff: Thirty-seven-year-old Kareem Smith, also known as “Stamma,” is now indebted to the court in the sum of $1,010 after pleading guilty to two counts of aggravated assault upon police officers, stemming from an incident earlier this week in Belize City.

Smith appeared unrepresented before a Senior Magistrate in Court #2, where he admitted to assaulting two police officers. For his guilty plea, Smith was handed a non-custodial sentence of $500 on each count, plus $10 in court costs, bringing the total to $1,010. He was given until March 31 and April 30, 2026, respectively, to pay the fines.

The charges arose from an incident on Wednesday, December 17, 2025. Before entering his guilty plea, Smith—who has a history before the courts—requested a sentencing indication, explaining that he did not wish to return to jail due to his medical condition. Smith told the court he recently sustained a gunshot injury that left him in severe pain, particularly in his spinal area, and unable to stand properly.

According to police, at about 10:50 p.m., officers were conducting mobile patrol on Flamboyant Street when they observed Smith approaching the police vehicle dressed in black, allegedly smoking what appeared to be cannabis. Police say that upon approaching him, Smith swallowed the lit substance.

When officers informed Smith that he would be searched, police allege that he became boisterous and, while in front of one of the officers, he uttered threatening words before lifting his left hand and striking the officer.

In court, Smith admitted that he touched the officer but claimed it was not intentional. He alleged that police were roughing him up directly on his gunshot injury, causing unbearable pain, and that he reacted while trying to tell the officer to stop. Smith claimed his complaints were ignored.

Despite disputing parts of the facts read out in court, Smith accepted full responsibility for his actions and maintained his guilty plea, which was accepted by the court. He was subsequently offered bail, which he met.

Police have indicated that Smith is expected to be charged with additional offenses, including obstruction.

The matter has concluded in the Magistrate’s Court, pending any further charges.
