By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 43-year-old fisherman, Barrington Elrington Miller, has been convicted but spared jail after admitting to charges of going equipped to steal, escaping from lawful custody, and possession of utensils for smoking drugs.
Miller was caught on Independence Day, Sunday, September 21, at the Bottom Dollar Supermarket compound on North Front Street, hiding under a vehicle with a pair of pliers, a screwdriver, and a hand file. In court, he admitted he intended to commit theft.
Police say that while in custody, Miller attempted to flee but was quickly recaptured. A search of his belongings also uncovered a 3.62-inch metal pipe adapted for smoking cannabis.
Appearing unrepresented before Magistrate Mannon Dennison in Court #6, Miller pleaded guilty to all three charges.
He was fined a total of $815 across the three offenses, with deadlines between October 15 and November 30, 2025, to make payments or face prison terms ranging from one to three months.
Despite the seriousness of the offenses, as a first-time offender Miller avoided jail time and was instead handed non-custodial sentences.
