By Breaking Belize News Staff: Police have launched an investigation into the death of a 32-year-old man who passed away shortly after being detained by police on Monday morning in San Pedro.
The deceased has been identified as Selvin Eziera Sealy, an unemployed Belizean of D.F.C. Area, San Pedro Town. His body was discovered around 8:20 a.m. at the San Pedro Polyclinic by Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) officers.
Initial reports reveal that around 6:20 a.m., Sealy was spotted by a security officer behaving erratically on the beach near Villa Abrazos. The officer observed Sealy climb into a pine tree, reportedly claiming he was being chased by a dog. After coming down, Sealy jumped into the property’s pool, ignoring repeated requests to exit.
During attempts to get out of the pool, Sealy reportedly slipped twice, striking his chin. He was eventually subdued by the security officer and a supervisor, handcuffed, and moved to the front of the hotel to await police. Upon police arrival, Sealy reportedly resisted arrest and had to be restrained further before being transported to the police station.
Police say Sealy was found unconscious upon arrival at the station and was immediately taken to the San Pedro Polyclinic, where he was pronounced dead on arrival by Dr. Nairobis Almira.
A police investigation is ongoing. The body, which showed abrasions to the knees, shin, foot, and wrist, was transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital morgue for a postmortem examination. Statements are being collected, and surveillance footage from the incident is being reviewed.
