By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 34-year-old Maskall Village man accused of violently assaulting his six-month pregnant common-law wife on Christmas Day has been denied bail after the court described the allegations as disturbing.
Henry Hulse appeared unrepresented on Monday before the Chief Magistrate in Court #2 at the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, where he was arraigned on a single charge of common assault.
During the proceedings, Hulse initially indicated a guilty plea but later withdrew it after telling the court he did not agree with all the facts read out. “Dah nuh everything I agree with, so I am not guilty,” Hulse said, admitting he had been drinking at the time but claiming he was not drunk. He acknowledged sitting on his partner but denied sitting on her belly or repeatedly slapping her, instead alleging that she was the aggressor.
Given the seriousness of the allegations—particularly that the complainant was six months pregnant at the time—the Chief Magistrate refused bail, stating that it would be reconsidered at a later date. Hulse was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until January 20, 2026, when the court will reassess whether bail should be granted.
According to the police report, the domestic incident occurred on Thursday, December 25, 2025. The woman told police that she was at home with her three-year-old daughter when Hulse arrived. An argument reportedly ensued, during which Hulse allegedly insulted her, sat on her belly, restrained her hands, slapped her repeatedly in the face and mouth—causing bleeding—and kicked her in the abdomen, leaving her in pain and fearing for the safety of her unborn child.
Sanchez was taken to hospital for medical attention, and a medico-legal form was issued. However, at the time charges were brought, police had not yet received the completed medical report, which is why Hulse was charged only with common assault.
Police investigations into the matter are ongoing as the case moves through the court system.
