By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Ladyville maintenance worker who initially pleaded guilty to common assault had his plea rejected in court after his explanation suggested he may have acted in self-defense.
Frank Young Jr., of the Japan area in Ladyville, appeared before a Senior Magistrate on a charge of common assault in connection with an alleged incident involving another man on November 8, 2025.
Young, who is well known to both police and the courts, first entered a guilty plea and asked for leniency, telling the Magistrate he hoped for a fine. However, when he went on to explain the incident, he claimed that the man was the aggressor who approached and punched him first. Young said he only pushed the man away and was unable to make a report afterward because the other man reached the police station before he did.
The Magistrate informed Young that his explanation amounted to a defense and therefore could not stand alongside a guilty plea. She rejected the plea and instead entered an equivocal plea of not guilty on his behalf.
Young was granted bail of $500 with one surety of the same amount. As conditions of bail, he must not contact the virtual complainant or the complainant’s family and must remain at least 100 feet away from him.
The matter is adjourned to January 2026.
