By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 47-year-old construction worker has been arrested and charged with cruelty to animals after allegedly deliberately running down a family dog with his pickup truck on Commerce Street in Dangriga.
Humberto Hernandez, a resident of the Stann Creek District, was charged following a complaint by a police officer on Tuesday, October 6.
The officer reported that he was walking home from the beach with his mother, daughter and dog, Lola, when he instructed the animal to follow his family members, who were walking ahead of him.
Shortly afterward, he noticed a dark-colored pickup approaching from behind, with the driver reportedly revving the engine repeatedly.
The officer alleged that the driver continued accelerating toward Lola before striking the dog with the front bumper and driving away without stopping.
He rushed to the animal and found her lying motionless on the road, bleeding from her face and apparently unresponsive.
The officer was unable to obtain the vehicle’s registration number but subsequently gathered information from nearby residents that led police to identify Hernandez as a suspect.
Hernandez was detained and formally charged with cruelty to animals. The report does not establish whether Lola survived the incident.
