By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 21-year-old Southside Belize City man with no fixed address was arraigned in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Thursday on two criminal offenses related to drug use and resisting police.
The accused, Shane Yearwood, appeared unrepresented before Magistrate Ludlow Black in Court #1, where he faced charges of possession of utensils used for smoking a controlled drug—specifically crack cocaine—and resisting lawful arrest.
According to police, on Saturday, May 3, 2025, Yearwood was found at the Queen Street Police Station with a 2.5-centimeter silver metal pipe used to smoke crack cocaine. He was also accused of resisting arrest by PC #2964 Dianna Welch while on New Road.
Yearwood pleaded guilty to the possession charge but denied resisting arrest, telling the court it wasn’t PC Welch who tried to detain him. “It was a tall dude,” he stated, adding that several officers had passed by and tried to search him for a piece of jewelry.
Magistrate Black clarified that the issue was whether Yearwood had resisted police efforts to detain him, which Yearwood denied. As a result, an equivocal plea of not guilty was entered on his behalf for the resisting arrest charge.
Bail of $500 plus one surety was granted, but Yearwood was unable to meet the requirement and was remanded to the Belize Central Prison. He was fined $200 plus a $5 court cost for the possession offense and given until May 30, 2025, to pay or face three months in prison.
Yearwood’s next court appearance for the resisting arrest charge is scheduled for July 2, 2025.
