By Breaking Belize News Staff: Just days after pleading guilty to assaulting his estranged common-law wife, Charles Richard August is back behind bars, now facing a second charge of common assault involving the same victim.
The 26-year-old stevedore from Antelope Street appeared unrepresented before Magistrate Ludlow Black in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Monday, where he was read a single charge of assault in connection with an incident that allegedly occurred on Thursday, July 31, 2025.
August pleaded not guilty, and bail was granted in the sum of $3,000 plus one surety. However, he was unable to meet bail and was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until he can do so.
Magistrate Black imposed strict conditions on August’s bail, including that he must report every Friday to the Mahogany Street Police Station. He must avoid all contact with the victim—directly or indirectly. And he must stay at least 100 feet away from the victim at all times.
Tensions heightened during the hearing when the woman asked the court to revoke August’s bail in a separate gun-related case, for which she had previously signed as his surety. The court acknowledged that she had since withdrawn her bail, leaving August in need of a new surety to remain free in that case as well.
This marks August’s second assault charge involving the same woman in under a week. On Tuesday, July 29, he pleaded guilty to a previous assault and was fined $300 plus $5 court cost, due by August 15, or face three months in prison.
August has a history of run-ins with the law, including a theft conviction in November 2023, when he was fined for stealing $2,450. In December 2022, he and his then-girlfriend were both remanded for firearm and ammunition charges.
He is expected to return to court on the new assault charge later this year.
