By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 27-year-old construction worker accused of theft was remanded to the Belize Central Prison on Tuesday after a magistrate denied him bail, citing a pattern of missed court appearances and a lengthy criminal record.

Joshua (Josh Nicholas) Flowers of Consuelo Street appeared unrepresented before Magistrate Mannon Dennison in Court #6 at the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, where he was arraigned on a single charge of theft. Flowers pleaded not guilty, but the prosecution mounted a strong objection to bail.

Prosecutors argued that Flowers is a flight risk and has repeatedly failed to comply with court conditions in other matters, including a burglary case in which he was required to sign in at a police station. The court was told that Flowers has multiple pending matters for crimes of dishonesty and a prior conviction for handling stolen goods, for which he was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment. Prosecutors further submitted that Flowers’ appearance in court on Tuesday was only because he had been arrested.

Asked to address the court, Flowers claimed he missed a recent court date due to being on lockdown and said illness caused him to miss another appearance. He urged the court to grant bail, arguing that he is presumed innocent. Magistrate Dennison ultimately denied bail and ordered Flowers remanded.

The charge arises from a theft reported on Friday, January 9, 2026. According to police, the complainant reported that he left his laptop on the steps of his home for a few minutes while printing documents. About eight minutes later, after being alerted by his barking dog, he said he saw a man exiting his yard with the laptop and fleeing despite being challenged.

Surveillance footage allegedly captured the theft and showed two suspects wearing helmets—one entering the yard to take the laptop and another arriving earlier on a red motorcycle resembling a 100 Meilun. The stolen items were listed as a black laptop valued at $100, a silver Apple MacBook valued at $3,500, an Apple reader valued at $40, an unknown-brand USB hub valued at $150, and assorted stationery valued at $390, totaling $4,090.

Police say officers later reviewed the footage and positively identified both suspects. One was identified as Flowers, who was allegedly seen driving the motorcycle, while the other suspect—who police say is known to them—remains at large. Flowers was detained the following day. Searches at his Consuelo Street residence and his girlfriend’s home reportedly did not recover the stolen items, but police say they found a white tennis shoe and a black helmet resembling those seen in the footage.

Flowers remains on remand as investigations continue.
