Man charged after rooster theft in Toledo

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): A quick police response led to the recovery of two stolen roosters and an arrest in the Toledo District, after a man reported that his chickens had been taken from his yard.

According to the Belize Police Department, the report was made at the Bella Vista Police Sub-Formation by a 48-year-old Belizean truck driver residing in San Isidro Village. He told police that on Monday, June 29, 2026, at around 9:00 p.m., he was at home when he heard his chickens making noise outside. When he went to check, he reported seeing a man dressed in gray short pants and an orange T-shirt leaving his yard with a chicken in each hand, before escaping into nearby bushes. He then discovered that two brown feathered roosters were missing, valued at a total of $65.

Not long after, police on patrol along the Thomas Vincent Ramos Highway, around mile 45, had their attention drawn to a man who appeared to be hiding something in his orange T-shirt. A search reportedly turned up two roosters in his possession. The man and the birds were taken to the home of the truck driver, who positively identified the roosters as his.

Police recorded a statement and requested court action. The accused, a 26-year-old unemployed Belizean of San Isidro Village, was subsequently arrested and charged with the crime of theft. He was cautioned and chose to remain silent.
