By Breaking Belize News Staff: Another alleged mental health case has surfaced after a Belize City man could not be brought before the court before the end of 2025 because he was found butt naked in his holding cell.
Thirty-seven-year-old Haral Palma remains in custody after his scheduled court appearance was postponed when police discovered he was wearing only his “birth suit” at the precinct where he was detained. As a result, his arraignment had been delayed until today.
Palma is accused of aggravated assault upon a police officer following an incident earlier this week. According to police reports, around 4:00 p.m., police observed a shirtless man armed with an object resembling a blade at a bus stop, allegedly pushing it toward members of the public. When the officer approached, the man reportedly pulled the weapon on her, hurled insults, and threatened violence.
Police say that as the officer attempted to disarm him, Palma became disorderly and aggressive, forcing her to use her government-issued firearm to retrieve the weapon. He was subsequently detained and taken to Precinct 1 Police Station, where his identity was confirmed and charges were prepared.
Palma’s inability to appear in court brings the total number of reported cases involving alleged mental health concerns before the courts this week to three. Earlier in the week, Kareem Anderson, 27, and Richard Cherrington were also brought before a magistrate but could not be arraigned, as pleas could not be taken. In both matters, the Chief Magistrate ordered that the men be remanded to Belize Central Prison pending psychiatric evaluations.
Palma remains in custody until his arraignment.
