By Breaking Belize News Staff: Twenty-eight-year-old Freddy Vasquez remains in custody despite receiving a fine for harming his wife, after police say he escaped from lawful custody and was later recaptured.

Vasquez appeared on Thursday before a Senior Magistrate in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, Court #2, where he pleaded guilty to a single charge of harm. He was fined $300 plus $5.00 cost of court, payable by the end of April 2026, in default three months’ imprisonment.

The charge arose from a domestic incident on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, involving Vasquez’s wife, a 21-year-old food vendor of Lords Bank Village, Ladyville. She told police that after returning home and discovering a gallon of Clorox missing, Vasquez admitted he had sold it to get money to travel to court. When she said she was fed up and attempted to leave the house, he allegedly assaulted her in the presence of their children.

According to the woman, Vasquez grabbed her, pulled her back inside the house, pushed her against a wall, and choked her with both hands while shouting at her to “shut up.” She reported escaping his grip, only to be punched, dragged by her hair, and choked again before police arrived. Medical examination later classified her injuries as harm.

Police say that after Vasquez was detained and charged on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, he managed to escape from lawful custody but was subsequently recaptured. Following his guilty plea for harm, officers from the Criminal Investigation Branch escorted him back into custody.

Vasquez is expected to be arraigned tomorrow on an additional charge of escape from lawful custody, keeping him behind bars despite the non-custodial sentence imposed for the harm conviction.
