By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 34-year-old construction worker from St. Pauls Bank, was accused of breaking into a young woman’s home and violently attacking her claiming that she caused his wife to lose her job. He is out on bail following his arraignment in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

Michael Stephenson, of St. Pauls Bank Village, appeared unrepresented before Magistrate Mannon Dennison in Court #6, where he was read a single charge of burglary. Allegations are that on Friday, November 21, 2025, he entered a young woman’s home in Double Head Cabbage with the intent to cause her grievous bodily harm.

Stephenson pleaded not guilty. With no objection to bail, the prosecutor requested strict conditions. Magistrate Dennison granted bail in the amount of $5,000 plus two sureties of $2,500 each.

Under the terms of his release, Stephenson must have no contact with the virtual complainant or her family; stay at least 100 feet away from her, as they are neighbors; and report to the Bermudian Landing Police Station every Friday between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., beginning November 28, 2025.

He is scheduled to return to court on January 12, 2026.

According to a police report, the woman visited Bermudian Landing Police Station on November 22, 2025, and reported that the evening before, around 6:30 p.m., she encountered a dark-skinned man standing inside her home as she prepared to do laundry.

She told police she recognized him as “Michael,” a man she knows as the common-law husband of a woman from St. Pauls Bank.

When she asked him why he was inside her house, he suddenly attacked her—grabbing her by the neck. She attempted to flee toward the bathroom, but the man allegedly seized her by the shirt, threw her into a bedroom, pushed her onto a bed, and began choking her.

The complainant reported that the man accused her of causing his partner to lose her job, reportedly saying: “Why you nuh deh work? Dah sake ah you my wife di lose job.”

She stated that after a brief verbal exchange, he again choked her, warning that if she didn’t return to work, she and her children would suffer consequences. The woman told police she feared for her life during the attack.

Before leaving, Stephenson allegedly smelled strongly of alcohol and threatened that if he couldn’t find her, he would “deal with” one of his relatives.

Police later arrested and charged Michael Stephenson for burglary with intent to cause grievous harm.

The case continues in January.
