By Breaking Belize News Staff: Keron Coote, a 29-year-old man accused of assaulting his father and stepmother, remains behind bars after a court hearing earlier today. Coote is charged with common assault against his father and aggravated assault with a firearm and wounding against his stepmother.
The alleged incident occurred on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, and Coote first appeared in court on January 10, where he pleaded not guilty to all charges. While his father expressed his desire to drop the charges against his son, the more serious firearm-related charge involving his stepmother could not be withdrawn by the prosecution at the time.
After spending six nights on remand, Coote returned to court this morning, hoping for the matter to be resolved. However, the mother, who had previously indicated her intention to withdraw the charges, was absent from court. The case has been adjourned to tomorrow, Friday, January 17, 2025, with the expectation that his stepmother will appear to formalize the withdrawal.
The allegations involve a “gunplay” incident at the family home, which is said to have escalated on January 8. Until the matter is resolved, Coote remains in custody as the legal process unfolds.
