By Aaron Humes: In the second quarter of 2024, the primary sector experienced a significant increase in activities, with a total estimated value of $107.8 million. This reflected a 5.6 percent rise from the same period in 2023. The growth was attributed to improved weather conditions, particularly during the months of April to June 2024. All three major agricultural crops saw an increase in output, with citrus production notably rising from 1.9 thousand metric tons to 4.8 thousand metric tons. Orange fruit deliveries played a significant role in this upturn. Additionally, banana production rose by 22.9 percent, and sugarcane production grew by 14.1 percent.
The livestock industry also experienced a 2 percent increase, primarily driven by a 7.5 percent rise in poultry production. However, cattle and pig production saw slight decreases of 2.1 percent and 3.7 percent, respectively. Despite the overall growth within the primary sector, the fishing industry decreased by 4.1 percent, largely due to reduced shrimp production, which fell by more than half from 106.3 thousand pounds to 46.2 thousand pounds.
These developments in the primary sector are indicative of the dynamic nature of the agricultural and fishing industries, influenced by various factors such as weather conditions and market demand. As the sector continues to evolve, stakeholders will closely monitor these trends to make informed decisions and adjustments to their operations.
