Major crimes drop in 2024 as police seize more guns and drugs, says Minister Musa

By Zoila Palma:  Belize recorded a significant decline in major crimes last year, along with a sharp rise in arrests and seizures, according to Minister of Home Affairs and New Growth Industries, Kareem Musa.

“In 2024, Belize witnessed a substantial reduction in major crimes, recording 1,062 major crime incidents, down by 231 cases compared to the previous year. Each prevented crime reflects a life potentially sparec a community reassured, and a child who can walk to school in peace,” Musa stated.

“In the year 2024/2025, 479 arrests were made for offenses including drug trafficking, illegal firearms possession, and other major crimes. These efforts led to the seizure of illegal substances, 139 illegal firearms, and 3,532 rounds of ammunition, now off the streets of Belize, reflecting a 30% increase in seizures and arrests compared to 2023,” Musa added.

Musa credited the results to targeted policing strategies and improved community engagement, positioning the figures as evidence of progress in Belize’s fight against crime.
