By Zoila Palma: Power was restored across parts of southeastern Mexico around 3 a.m. today following a major blackout that left more than 10 million people without electricity for approximately seven hours. Mexico’s Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) attributed the outage to alleged vandalism.
The blackout began Monday evening after two high-voltage power lines were reportedly damaged, affecting communities across Yucatán, Quintana Roo, Campeche and Chiapas. Major cities including Mérida, Cancún, Playa del Carmen and Chetumal were among those affected.
The prolonged outage disrupted daily life and business operations, with businesses in Mérida reporting problems with electronic payments, refrigeration and air-conditioning during the blackout.
CFE said specialized personnel identified damaged insulation strings on one of the transmission structures and worked through the night to repair the system and restore electricity.
By early Tuesday morning, CFE reported that electricity service had been fully restored to affected customers.
The blackout was also felt in Belize, where parts of the country experienced partial power disruptions. The incident comes as both Belize and southeastern Mexico continue to face electricity supply challenges amid extreme heat, limited generation capacity and infrastructure constraints.
