By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 57-year-old Belize City man is on remand at the Belize Central Prison after being found guilty of harming his 24-year-old common-law wife. Edgar Frederick Richards, a self-employed resident of Mahogany Street Extension, was convicted on Wednesday in Magistrate’s Court #4 for an incident that occurred on August 1, 2024, at their shared home.
The court heard that Richards became upset after his wife’s brother inquired about her well-being. Upon returning home, Richards allegedly confronted her about the interaction and struck her on both hands, leaving bruises. Medical attention was sought, and the injuries were documented.
During the trial, the victim testified about the altercation, while Richards denied the accusations, claiming his innocence. Despite his defense, the sitting Magistrate found him guilty of harm.
Richards has been remanded to the Belize Central Prison pending sentencing, scheduled for Monday, December 9, 2024. Outside the courtroom, the victim was seen in tears, visibly distressed over his remand.
