Magical history tour makes its way through Benque Viejo del Carmen

By Zoila Palma:  The Belize @45 Magical History Tour continued its journey across the country with a stop in Benque Viejo del Carmen, Cayo District, bringing history, dialogue and critical reflection to students and community members as Belize prepares to celebrate 45 years of independence.

Led by the Institute for Social & Cultural Research (ISCR-NICH) in partnership with historian Dr. Assad Shoman, the tour encourages Belizeans to examine the country’s journey toward independence, the experiences that shaped the nation and the continuing importance of decolonization.

On September 4, Dr. Shoman met with students of Mopan Technical High School, engaging them in discussions about Belize’s history, national identity and the different perspectives that have influenced the country’s development.

The conversation continued later that evening at the Benque House of Culture, where community leaders and residents participated in a public forum to share perspectives and reflect on Belize’s past.

The Magical History Tour will continue its journey with stops in Orange Walk on September 15 and Corozal on September 16.
