Machel Montano wins 2024 Calypso Monarch in Trinidad’s 2024 Carnival

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Making a superb presentation of his Soul of Calypso at the Trinidad and Tobago 2024 Carnival season, Machel Montano captivated the judges and the audience and was crowned 2024 Calypso Monarch.

Montano beat a number of strong competitors, including reigning Monarch Duane Ta’Zayah O’Connor, on Sunday night at the Dimanche Gras show at the Queens Park Savannah in Port of Spain.

Montano is the first artist to win the Young Kings, Road March, Soca Monarch, and Calypso Monarch titles. Montano has won the Road March title ten times and the Soca Monarch crown six times.

“Wow ! I couldn’t have dreamt this one up ! The wonder of following your dreams . I told you all ‘Ah will never miss ah next carnival againnnnnnn’,” Montano said on Instagram.

Montano said he will be defending his crown.

“If you win a title, then you must defend it,” Montano said after pocketing the $500,000 winners prize and a $350,000 Suzuki Vitara.

Former Calypso Monarchs Karene Asche and Roderick ‘Chuck’ Gordon came in second and third place respectively.

Mical Teja, who sang his popular song ‘DNA’, secured the fourth spot.

Artists who had previously won the competition, Helon Francis, Kurt Allen, Defending champion Duane Ta’Zayah O’Connor, and Winston ‘Gypsy’ Peters placed fifth, eighth, ninth, and 10th respectively.

Roxanne Omala and Joseph Lewis were crowned the Queen and King of Carnival respectively at the Dimanche Gras show.
