By Breaking Belize News Staff: Lyson James Cacho has been sentenced to a fixed term of 30 years in prison for the murder of 23-year-old Jordan Waight.
The sentence was handed down late Monday evening by Justice Candace Nanton in the High Court, after Cacho pleaded guilty during his murder trial.
Waight, a resident of Police Street, Belize City, was shot once to the back of the head on Barbara Harris Street in 2024. He died on the spot.
During the trial, video footage was presented showing Cacho and Waight in a yard with others around 9:00 a.m. The footage later showed Waight walking away before Cacho rode up behind him on a bicycle and fired a single shot.
After the footage was played and witnesses testified, Cacho consulted with his attorney, Ian Gray, and later changed his plea from not guilty to guilty.
In sentencing him, Justice Nanton used a starting point of 35 years but reduced the sentence after considering Cacho’s guilty plea, his remorse, his time spent on remand, and his conduct while at the Belize Central Prison. The court noted that Cacho had spent 770 days on remand and had completed four rehabilitation programs while incarcerated.
Justice Nanton also noted that Cacho appeared genuinely remorseful when he addressed the court and apologized for the killing.
Cacho claimed he committed the murder because he had been threatened.
The prosecution had five additional witnesses prepared to testify, but the trial ended after Cacho changed his plea.
