By Horace Palacio: Just three days after being named as a suspect in a retaliation shooting in Belmopan, 24-year-old Luis Marin was shot and killed in Belize City in what police now fear may be part of a spiraling street war.

Police had been looking for Marin in connection with the April 5 shooting of Jamal Hyde in the parking lot of T&J Supermarket in Belmopan. In that attack, over 15 shots were fired at a black Mazda Tribute occupied by five people. Hyde was hit in the upper right leg and rushed to the Western Regional Hospital.

Surveillance footage from the Belmopan incident showed passengers scrambling for their lives as a gunman in a long-sleeve shirt stepped out of a white Suburban SUV and opened fire at close range before fleeing.

Then, on the night of April 8, police were called to a home on Pinks Alley in Belize City, where they discovered Luis Marin’s lifeless body seated in a sofa chair with gunshot wounds to the body. Investigators say Marin was with a relative when a gunman entered the home and opened fire, hitting him multiple times before fleeing.

Police have since confirmed that Marin was a person of interest in the Belmopan shooting, which was believed to be connected to a previous shooting at the home of Ryan Hyde. Authorities now suspect that Marin’s killing could be retaliatory.

Police recovered expended shells, slugs, and blood swabs at the Belize City crime scene, but say that despite interviewing multiple persons, no useful information has been obtained.
