By Aaron Humes: A shooting incident at East Collet Canal that left two dead and two others injured led to the arrest and charges of 21-year-old Luewin Link with murder and attempted murder after a week-long investigation.

On March 12, around 11:00 a.m., police received reports of shots fired in the Conch Shell Bay area. Responding officers found two victims inside their food stall. Clinton Pou, 29, succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, while his sister, Kiandra Pou, 27, is recovering.

Assistant Superintendent Stacy Smith, speaking at a press briefing, confirmed the charges for Link, a maintenance worker from Lords Bank Village, Belize District: “As a consequence of Police’s ongoing investigation into the shooting incident which claimed the life of Clinton Pou, police have formally arrested and charged Luewin Link, a Belizean of a Belize district address, for the crime of murder. Due to the serious nature of the charges, Link was denied bail during his arraignment in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court. He has been remanded to Belize Central Prison and is scheduled to return to court on June 9.

ASP Smith added as to motive that “The angle that is being pursued is in relation to the shooting incident the murder of [Edward] Saldano,” which occurred a few days prior; investigations continue although no other persons are being sought.

On the day of the shooting, eyewitnesses reported seeing two men on a motorcycle approach the food stall wearing helmets and ski masks. The man, later identified as Link, exited the motorcycle and opened fire at close range before fleeing the scene.

The police were able to chase another suspect, Ryan Barnett, 40, who was also shot during the police pursuit and later pronounced dead at the hospital. Link, who sustained injuries during the altercation, was apprehended shortly after and transported for medical care before being taken into custody.

During the investigation, officers retrieved numerous shell casings from the scene, including 13 nine-millimeter empty shells and 10 .223 empty shells, as well as a Lifan 125-5 motorcycle, helmets, ski masks, and other items related to the incident.
