By Aaron Humes: Defying a five-run deficit on the road at Yankee Stadium, the Los Angeles Dodgers rallied for their eighth World Series over old foes the New York Yankees tonight.
New York, which avoided elimination last night, staked ace Gerrit Cole to a 5-0 lead courtesy of several first-inning home runs.
But it all unraveled in the fifth inning, when the hosts allowed five unearned runs with a pair of errors, Freddie Freeman striking the decisive blow with a two-run single to cement his claim to Most Valuable Player status.
The teams traded runs before a sacrifice fly gave the Dodgers the lead for good. Starting pitcher Walker Buehler later closed out the game in the ninth.
The Dodgers overcame a rash of injuries to their pitching staff and in this series to talisman Shohei Ohtani, rendered less effective by a shoulder injury in game 3.
Meanwhile, New York must solve its sudden offensive woes apart from game 4 and stew over how it managed to blow the lead at home.
