By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 53-year-old taxi driver from Lords Bank spent the weekend in police custody after allegedly damaging his estranged common-law wife’s cellphone and crashing his vehicle into her car in a fit of jealousy.
David Edwards was arraigned in court on a single charge of damage to property on Monday. However, he walked free after his former partner chose not to proceed with the case.
According to police reports, the incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, February 23. The woman, a 47-year-old housekeeper, told authorities that around 1:00 a.m., Edwards accused her of infidelity while they were at #8 Eyre Street in Belize City. In a heated moment, he allegedly grabbed her black Samsung A21S cellphone, worth $600, and smashed it on the ground. He then reportedly reversed his vehicle into her red 2013 Nissan Rogue, causing an estimated $1,000 in damages to the front bumper.
Edwards was taken into custody and later charged, but during his court appearance, Larius requested no further legal action. Without providing a reason, she took the stand and formally withdrew her complaint. As a result, the Senior Magistrate dismissed the charge, citing a lack of prosecution, and Edwards was set free.
While Edwards avoided legal consequences, the case highlights ongoing concerns about domestic disputes escalating into criminal incidents.
