By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 36-year-old Lords Bank man has been granted bail after being charged in connection with an alleged domestic dispute in which his common-law wife and her 13-year-old daughter were reportedly assaulted.
Cesar Alexander Mazariegos, a fisherman of the Hollywood area in Lords Bank Village, was arraigned in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on two counts of common assault.
Mazariegos appeared unrepresented before Senior Magistrate Mannon Dennison, where he initially pleaded guilty with an explanation. After hearing his account of the incident, however, the magistrate determined that his explanation amounted to a possible defence and entered not guilty pleas on his behalf.
With no objection from the prosecution, Mazariegos was granted bail in the sum of $3,000 plus one surety of the same amount. As conditions of his bail, he is prohibited from contacting either complainant and must remain at least 150 feet away from them.
Police say the incident occurred at around 9:30 p.m. on August 28 at a residence in the Hollywood area.
According to police allegations, the 31-year-old woman was breastfeeding her baby inside a bedroom when Mazariegos entered and became involved in an argument with her. She alleged that he grabbed her around the neck in a choking position, causing difficulty breathing.
Her 13-year-old daughter allegedly intervened and was herself grabbed around the neck, slammed against a wall and slapped twice in the face.
The woman further alleged that when she attempted to protect her daughter, Mazariegos again placed her in a chokehold and punched her repeatedly to the head, face and back, causing pain, swelling, bruising and scratches. She also reportedly suffered a cut to her finger during the confrontation.
Police arrived shortly afterward, and the mother and daughter were issued medico-legal forms and taken to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital for treatment.
Mazariegos was detained later that night and subsequently charged.
In court, he disputed the allegations, saying he had arrived home after receiving upsetting news and claimed his wife and her daughter rushed toward him, prompting him to push them away.
He was able to post bail and is expected to return to court in early November.
