Loitering charge for man who refused to move

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): A man has been arrested and charged with loitering after he reportedly refused to leave an area when asked by police in Bella Vista Village, Toledo District.

According to the Belize Police Department, on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at around 4:05 p.m., officers on motorcycle patrol had their attention drawn to a group of men standing under the verandah of a building on a street in the village. Police approached the group and advised them to leave the area.

While the others reportedly began to disperse, one man declined to do so, stating that he was not committing any crime and did not have to leave. Police said he was then informed that he had committed the offence of loitering, placed under arrest, and escorted to the Bella Vista Police Station.

The accused was later identified as 30-year-old Ede Nilson Antonio Clavel, a Belizean labourer of Bladen Village. Police swore to an information and complaint and formally charged him with the offence of loitering. He was subsequently granted police bail and is scheduled to appear at the Punta Gorda Magistrate Court on Tuesday, July 7, 2026.

As with any matter before the court, Clavel is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
