By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The Fisheries Department has announced that the fishing season for the Caribbean Spiny Lobster will officially close on February 28, 2026.
The annual closed season will run from March 1st to June 30th, in accordance with Statutory Instrument No. 126 of 2024. Belize’s closure aligns with regional lobster management regulations established by the Organization for Central American Fisheries and Aquaculture Sector (OSPESCA).
Officials are reminding fishers and the public that possession of lobster during the closed season is strictly prohibited. Anyone found in violation will face prosecution under the Fisheries Resources Act.
Fishers are also required to remove all lobster traps from fishing grounds during the closure. The Fisheries Department says it will be actively enforcing compliance throughout the closed season.
Illegal fishing activities can be reported to the Fisheries Department at 224-4552 or via email at fisheries_department@fisheries.gov.bz.
