Lloyd Burgess cleared of 2023 murder of David Phillips found on John Smith Road; case against co-accused continues

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Lloyd Anthony Burgess, one of the two men accused of the September 2023 murder of David Anthony Phillips, commonly known as “Goofy,” has had the murder charge against him withdrawn. Burgess, 45,, received the news in court on Tuesday.

Burgess, along with his co-accused Jerdene Eton Jorgenson, a 37-year-old businessman, was charged with the murder of Phillips, whose body was discovered on the John Smith Road on September 28, 2023.

During the court proceedings, a memo from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) instructed the court to withdraw the murder charge against Burgess, while proceedings against Jorgenson are set to continue. Consequently, Burgess was informed of his newfound freedom and released from custody, leaving the courtroom a free man.

However, Jorgenson remains to face trial for the murder charge. The preliminary inquiry for the case against Burgess is scheduled for May 4, 2024, before Chief Magistrate Jayani Wegodapola.

Phillips was found with head injuries behind an unfinished cement structure. Police, aided by camera footage, were able to make progress in the investigation, leading to the arrest of Burgess and Jorgenson.
