By Breaking Belize News Staff: Confusion surrounds the closure of several karaoke bars in San Ignacio and Santa Elena on Friday night after business owners told Breaking Belize News that police ordered them to shut down without explanation.
Owners are now calling on authorities, including the San Ignacio and Santa Elena town council, police, and the Liquor License Board, to clarify what led to the action.
One business owner said their establishment was operating legally under a public special license when it was forced to close. The sudden shutdown left operators questioning whether any new regulations or directives had been introduced affecting karaoke businesses in the Twin Towns.
In response, Liquor License Board Chairman Karim Adle issued a statement denying any involvement. He stated that there is “no new law” regarding karaoke operations and emphasized that he does not have the authority to instruct police to close businesses that are lawfully operating.
Adle acknowledged that one establishment, Tandoor, had previously received a letter citing breaches of its license, but said no response has been received to date.
Adle also criticized Mayor Earl Trapp, accusing him of misrepresenting the situation and failing to attend Liquor Licensing Board meetings.
He urged the mayor to provide accurate information to the public, adding that despite political tensions, officials have a responsibility to be transparent with residents of the Twin Towns.
