By Breaking Belize News Staff: Lindon Requena has been convicted of burglary and sentenced to four years in prison after the court found that he unlawfully entered the home of his estranged wife in 2022 while a protection order was in effect.
However, Requena was credited for the four years, three months and more than three weeks he had already spent on remand, meaning he had served longer than the four-year sentence imposed by the Chief Magistrate and was therefore deemed to have served his time for the burglary conviction.
The charge stemmed from an April 7, 2022 incident in which Requena was accused of entering his then-wife’s home without permission while armed with a machete. Prosecutors alleged that he entered the property with intent to rape her.
During the trial, the woman testified that she was sitting in her living room at around 7:00 a.m. when Requena entered the house carrying the machete. She said he made sexual advances toward her and attempted to force her into a sexual act, resulting in a struggle before he eventually left.
At the time, a protection order issued by the Belize Family Court prohibited Requena from going near the woman’s home from March 28, 2022 through March 27, 2023.
In delivering the guilty verdict, the Chief Magistrate noted that Requena was aware of the protection order and had no lawful authority to enter the property.
The court initially considered a two-year sentence but increased the term to four years after taking into account Requena’s previous convictions, including two prior convictions for breaching protection orders and one for damage to property. He received no one-third reduction because he did not plead guilty and the matter proceeded to a full trial.
Although Requena was discharged on the burglary sentence because of the time already spent on remand, he remains at the Belize Central Prison, where he is serving a separate five-year sentence for breach of a protection order.
Requena returned to the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday in connection with a separate arson case, which has already proceeded to trial. That matter was adjourned until October 13, 2026.
A search of publicly indexed Belizean news sources did not turn up additional reliable reporting on Requena’s 2022 burglary case beyond the court information provided.
