By Zoila Palma: While overall vegetable prices in Belize fell by 4.7% in May, lettuce and okra saw sharp increases, according to new data from the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB).
Lettuce prices jumped by 29.1%, rising from $3.58 to $4.62 per pound. Okra also saw a significant increase, up 16.0% from $3.29 to $3.81 per pound.
These price hikes came despite a broader 1.0% rise in consumer prices and a 2.0% increase in the ‘Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages’ category.
The overall food price rise was driven by higher costs for cereals and fruits, even as most vegetable prices fell.
