By Aaron Humes: Moses “Shyne” Barrow, incumbent leader of the Opposition United Democratic Party, has issued a cease and desist letter against Channel 7 News news director Jules Vasquez.

The cease and desist notice, issued by Sharon Pitts of Pitts, Pitts & Associates Law Firm, cites allegations of defamation, cyberbullying, and unauthorized use of copyrighted music.

The letter details a series of posts and advertisements that the law firm claims are “unlawful” and designed to cause emotional distress to Barrow. The posts in question, disseminated across various media platforms including television and social media, reportedly contain inflammatory statements that undermine Barrow’s reputation, portraying him as an immature leader and suggesting familial rejection.

The legal representation for Barrow emphasized that the posts violate the Belize Cyber Crime Act, specifically sections aimed at false information dissemination and copyright infringement. “These adverts are egregious and filled with malice meant to deliberately cause extreme emotional stress and damage,” the letter states.

Among the claims highlighted in the cease and desist notice are accusations suggesting Barrow is a “spoiled child pretending to be a politician” and that he is responsible for dismantling Belize’s democracy. Other accusations imply personal shortcomings, depicting him as a “professional slap recipient” and a disgrace to his family.

In response to these posts, Barrow’s legal team is demanding the immediate cessation of these advertisements, retractions, and a public apology. They are also seeking damages amounting to $80,000 for the alleged harm suffered.

The notice warns that if compliance is not met within 14 days, further legal action will be pursued in the High Court. Barrow’s lawyers argue that their client has served Belize with integrity and that the defamatory adverts serve no public interest, calling their continuation a violation of both personal and intellectual property rights.
