Lecture— “Trópico agridulce”: Dialogue on agroecology and the cultural history of food in Puerto Rico

The exhibition “Trópico agridulce” is still on view at the Museum of Contemporary Art [Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Puerto Rico (MAC)] until July 19, 2026 [OR August 9, 2026—we found both dates online, sorry!] The museum will host a dialogue between Mónica Ocasio Vega and Georges Félix Lancelloti on Thursday, July 16, 2026, at 6:30pm, at the Julio Rosado del Valle Gallery at the MAC, in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The speakers will discuss the connections between agroecology, memory, food culture, and the territory of the Puerto Rican archipelago. The conversation will be moderated by associate curator Alexandra Méndez. Some of the questions that will be explored are: How are agroecology and the cultural history of food intertwined in Puerto Rico? What do our landscapes, crops, and culinary traditions reveal about who we are? See more information about the speakers below.

Mónica Ocasio Vega is Assistant Professor of Spanish at Trinity University (San Antonio, Texas). Her research examines the intersections of food, race, and gender in the Caribbean and its diasporas. Originally from Cabo Rojo, she defines herself, above all, as a Puerto Rican cook and caregiver, deeply connected to the rural life that shaped her upbringing. Her academic work has been published in journals such as Gastronómica, Small Axe, Intervenxions, and Hispanic Living.

Georges Félix Lancelloti, a biologist and agronomist of Franco-Puerto Rican descent, holds a PhD in Agricultural Systems Ecology from Wageningen University (The Netherlands). A specialist in agroecology and agroforestry, he has conducted research projects in the Caribbean, Europe, West Africa, and Mesoamerica. He is currently a professor at the University of Puerto Rico-Mayagüez, where he researches sustainable agricultural systems and collaborates with various local agricultural initiatives in Puerto Rico.
