By Zoila Palma: Galen University is set to host an in-depth archaeological lecture examining the political, social, and household structures of the Classic-period Maya kingdoms that once thrived in the upper Belize River Valley.
The presentation, titled “The Classic Maya Kingdoms of the Belize River Valley: Ancient Households, Politics, and Kinship,” will be delivered by Dr. John P. Walden, Assistant Professor at Galen University.
The event takes place on Thursday, November 27, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the San Ignacio–Santa Elena House of Culture.
The lecture will highlight new insights into several small Maya polities dating from AD 300–900, including Cahal Pech, Baking Pot, and Lower Dover.
According to the event details, each kingdom operated under its own ruling dynasty and relied on networks of secondary elites managing a population estimated at 20,000 commoners.
Dr. Walden’s research integrates multiple scientific approaches—including archaeology, epigraphy, radiocarbon dating, isotopic analysis, and genomic data—to reconstruct the ancient region’s political landscape.
The event is being hosted in partnership with the SISE House of Culture, the Museum of Belize and Houses of Culture, U Janal Masewal, and the Belize Valley Archaeological Reconnaissance Project (BVAR).
