By Zoila Palma: Last week, the Government of Belize convened a high-level meeting with senior government officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, the Ministry of Finance and Economic Transformation, and the Central Bank of Belize to consider the implications of the announced reciprocal tariffs by the United States.
Leader of the Opposition Tracy Panton says that the tariffs will raise the cost of living for Belizeans and that it should be taken on a bipartisan approach.
“We need to pay attention to what is happening, in the global context. We all have heard the saying that when the US sneezes, Belize catches a cold. The tariffs will, in my opinion, raise the cost of living exponentially for Belizeans. And that is something that requires us all to put our best minds at the table to find the solutions, particularly for those who are most marginalized and vulnerable in our country,” Panton said.
“But I certainly think that it requires all hands on deck, the government, the opposition, it requires civil society. It requires a business community for us to sit down and come up with a strategic and comprehensive plan on how we are going to address this new development,” Panton added.
