By Zoila Palma: Leader of the Opposition Tracy Panton says that cabinet’s statement on the Budna kidnapping case is “nothing short of a sham and a direct insult to the Belizean people.”
“After weeks of silence, this Briceno Administration, PM and his Cabinet, now pretend to act responsibly?!? Calling belatedly for an “independent investigation” when the public demanded one from day one? This is NOT leadership! This is a cover up at the highest level,” Panton said.
“The Cabinet’s attempt to silence police officers and to hide the full contents of the Inquiry Report from the public reeks of a state sanctioned abduction of a Belizean national. Belizeans do not need more secrecy. We need answers. We need accountability. We need the truth, the whole truth,” Panton added.
Panton also said that the decision to reinstate the Commissioner of Police is “egregious” and “reckless.”
“Belizeans are no fools. We see clearly that this Government is more interested in protecting its insiders than safeguarding the public trust in institutions who have both an obligation and responsibility to protect our citizens. The United Democratic Party will NOT rest until this case is fully exposed; until every question is answered; until every official who failed in their duty is held to account,” Panton stated.
