By Zoila Palma: Today, Leader of the Opposition Tracy Panton issued a statement calling out the Prime Minister and his administration for the proposed acquisition of Smart.
“All indications are that the Briceño Administration is determined to force through the proposed BTL acquisition of SpeedNet/SMART no matter the cost, no matter the questions, and no matter the consequences for the Belizean people.
First, it was $10 million down with the remaining $70 million spread over 4.5 years, with interest.
Now, it is zero dollars down,” Panton said.
“First, the public was told there would be one year of no rate increases for consumers. Now, that promise has shifted to three years with no clarity on what follows,” Panton added.
Panton says that there is still no explanation of how aging, near-obsolete infrastructure will be upgraded or replaced and no disclosure of the liabilities the Belizean people will be inheriting from SpeedNet/SMART.
“While the working poor are forced to fight over crumbs through the CDF, SpeedNet/SMART stands to benefit from over $80 million of public money plus interest.
Worse still, the hard-earned contributions of Belizean taxpayers are being placed at risk without a single disclosure that substantiates or justifies this so-called “deal,” Panton explained.
The Leader of the Opposition says that the Prime Minister has chosen “spectacle over substance.”
