By Zoila Palma:  Today, Leader of the Opposition Tracy Panton issued a statement demanding accountability in the reported transport department scandal in Spanish Lookout.

“The revelation that over $80,000 in public funds were misappropriated from the Spanish Lookout branch of the Transport Department is yet another troubling example of the glaring lack of oversight and accountability under this administration. An administration, who I may add, promised in their Plan Belize Manifesto, to set the gold standard for transparency and accountability in the use of public resources,” Panton said.

Panton expressed concern that “the amount stolen may far exceed the initial estimates, and that the issue remained unaddressed until flagged by concerned members of the local Mennonite Community.”

Panton further called for full transparency and accountability.

Panton calls on the government to release the findings of the audit and allow the Office of the Auditor General to conduct an investigation without political interference.

“Having served on the Joint Public Accounts Committee myself, I have reason to believe that this is not an isolated incident. It is a reflection of the growing governance crisis within our public service institutions and a severely broken financial system. Every dollar stolen from the public purse is a dollar denied to schools, hospitals, and other social safety net services our people depend on,” Panton expressed.
