By Zoila Palma: Earlier this week, Belize joined the global community in observing International Day of Parliamentarism, a day set aside to recognize the vital role that Parliaments play in strengthening democracy, promoting accountability, and giving voice to the people.
Leader of the Opposition Tracy Panton has extended congratulations to the National Assembly of Belize, including the Speaker of the House, the President of the Senate, Members of the House of Representatives, Senators, the Clerk, Deputy Clerk, and all Members of Staff of the National Assembly, for their continued service to Belize’s parliamentary democracy.
“Parliament remains one of the most important institutions in our nation. It is where the will of the people is represented; where laws are carefully considered; where national priorities are debated; and, where governments must be held accountable,” Panton explained.
Panton says that this serves as a reminder that democracy requires more than elections.
“It requires strong institutions; respect for differing views; transparency in decision-making; and, a shared commitment to the people we are privileged to serve,” she added.
Panton expressed enthusiasm for the National Assembly of Belize to continue to grow as a place of meaningful debate, respectful engagement, and responsible leadership in service to Belize.
