By Zoila Palma: Leader of the Opposition Tracy Panton says that the suffering in Cuba is “unconscionable.”
“The suffering now confronting the Cuban people. marked by severe fuel shortages that threaten access to food, medicine, electricity, and basic sanitation, is not a matter for political gamesmanship. It is a humanitarian crisis affecting more than 11 million civilians. This is not about ideology. It is about humanity,” Panton said.
“When ordinary families cannot refrigerate food, when hospitals struggle to operate, when transportation systems grind to a halt, and when the most vulnerable are placed at grave risk, we cannot look away. Silence in the face of widespread civilian hardship is not neutrality. It is indifference,” Panton added.
Panton says that on December 8, 1972, Caribbean leaders chose courage over conformity and affirmed sovereign relations with Cuba despite immense global pressure.
“That moment was not about politics; it was about dignity, self-determination, and regional solidarity. Today demands similar moral clarity,” Panton explained.
As CARICOM Heads of Government prepare to meet, Panton says that the citizens of this hemisphere must call for solutions that protect human life.
“We must advocate for dialogue over division. We must ensure that humanitarian needs are never collateral damage in geopolitical disputes.
Belize understands the value of sovereignty, international law, and peaceful engagement. But above all, we understand the value of human life. Let us stand in solidarity with the people of Cuba.Let us affirm that as a Region sharing a common history, we are a community bound by conscience. Cuba has stood with us in times of need. It is time we stand with them, without apology,” Panton further expressed.
The Leader of the Opposition says that history will judge whether we chose silence or humanity.
