Leader of the Opposition: “A Budget of lies and deception” by “tone-deaf,” “checked out” Prime Minister

By Aaron Humes: Deprived of all of his colleagues on the Opposition side for the three days of the Budget Debate, Leader of the Opposition Moses “Shyne” Barrow led off the resumption of the debate by citing the 2024-25 General Revenue and Appropriation Bill as going “off track”.

It will not, he said, make the necessary investments in the short, medium, and long term to change national needs for the better – by increasing economic growth, safeguarding health and citizen security, easing “devastating” inflation, and alleviating poverty and strengthening the guardrails that protect the middle class.

If the Government truly believes it is doing well in economic policy, then it should not be afraid to call general elections earlier than scheduled, Barrow challenged; if not, then abandon their “arrogance” and start to live by their promises and the ideals of social justice envisioned by the People’s United Party’s avatar George Price, whom he said would be “ashamed” of today’s PUP.

Barrow further charged that the Government is misleading the public on issues such as the debt-to-GDP ratio – rather than 132 percent as quoted by the Prime Minister for 2020, it was actually 101 percent and mostly attributed to borrowing to address issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

After three years, the PUP’s performance has been at best “average” and “on par” with the UDP’s performance in similar circumstances and the UDP will return because Belizeans trust it with the economy and its stewardship.

“The Prime Minister is sub-par and has a lot of work to do. Stop the hype and start delivering,” Barrow challenged.
