By Zoila Palma: Leader of the Opposition Tracy Panton has condemned the recent wave of violence.
“We should all be outraged.
The pain is deep, and it stabs at the very soul of our nation. Here we go again! Belize has lost another son to senseless gun violence on our city streets. A 16-year-old young man, riding his bicycle in the St. Martin de Porres area, was gunned down.
A son.
A brother.
A friend.
A student.
A Belizean child with great promise,” Panton said.
Panton says that the State of Emergency is not working.
“It is not being properly enforced. It is not enough. It is not the crime prevention tool we urgently need at this time.
Derick Morris was just 16 years old, recently promoted to. his senior year at Sadie Vernon Technical High School. He had served his school community serve in the highly coveted role of Peer Helper,” Panton added.
Panton expressed sympathy to the family.
“Yet, in a matter of minutes, perhaps seconds, he was gunned down, and the hope and aspirations he represented for his family, his school, his community, and his country were taken away without a single thought for those left behind.
My heart goes out to his mother, who must now bury her 16-year-old son, our 16-year-old son, while facing challenges of her own,” Panton said.
Panton questioned the Government’s crime prevention plans.
Panton further called for the “immediate replacement of the Minister of Police and the current Commissioner of Police, both of whom have proven themselves incompetent and unfit to lead at this critical time.
Mira and Rosado MUST GO.
They MUST go NOW.”
