By Zoila Palma: Today, Leader of the Opposition Tracy Panton said that the report that the International Court of Justice (ICJ) has ruled unanimously in favor of Guatemala’s application to intervene in the case between Belize and Honduras is a notable development.
“While this ruling may be characterized as procedural, the implications are a cause for measured concern.
The Court’s acceptance that Guatemala has a legitimate legal interest in the proceedings signals that matters arising in the Belize–Honduras case may have direct relevance to Guatemala’s claim against Belize. This development is of significant national importance that transcends politics,” Panton said.
The Leader of the Opposition said that the defense of Belize’s sovereignty must be approached with transparency, diligence, and the highest level of competence.
The Opposition reiterated its full commitment to supporting all efforts that strengthens Belize’s position on the international stage.
“Belizeans deserve to know that our Government is fully prepared, strategically aligned, and unwavering in its defense of our borders. Sovereignty is not abstract. It is not negotiable. It is the foundation of our national identity and must be protected at all costs,” the Leader of the Opposition said.
