Leader of Opposition says “barriers imposed on access to healthcare affects most vulnerable”

By Zoila Palma:  Leader of the Opposition Tracy Panton says that “whenever barriers are imposed on access to healthcare, it is the most vulnerable who suffer most. While the Ministry of Health may argue that these measures are necessary to safeguard standards and promote best practices in healthcare delivery, it also has a duty to provide practical solutions to the very challenges these decisions create. This at a time when Belizeans can least afford to pay one blue cent more.”

The Ministry of Health and Wellness noted that it is enforcing measures with relations to contraceptives that require a prescription.

The Ministry says that the move is part of a broader commitment to safety, proper use, and quality healthcare.

But, Panton says that the National Health Insurance system must be an instrument of support where healthcare delivery matters most.

“A national rollout of NHI should never be about lining the coffers of a privileged few. It must be about expanding real, affordable, and timely healthcare access to the most vulnerable and marginalized Belizeans. Healthcare is not a luxury. It is a necessity. Access delayed or denied is dignity denied. Let us not forget the rallying cry:  the health of a nation is the wealth of a nation,” Panton added.
