By Zoila Palma: Leader of the Opposition Tracy Panton is questioning the manner in which the cases of Ryan Budna, former UDP Vice Chairman, Alberto August, and former Ombudsman Major Gilbert Swazo.
“While each matter is distinct and must be determined on its own facts, the allegations emerging from these cases are deeply troubling. They raise important questions about due process, fairness, the rule of law, and the proper exercise of state authority.
The rights and freedoms guaranteed under our Constitution are not privileges granted by any government. They are fundamental protections that belong to every Belizean and must be respected at all times,” Panton explained.
Panton says that “we must never allow the overreach of public institutions, or the perception of such overreach, to become normalized. A healthy democracy requires strong institutions, accountability, transparency, and an unwavering commitment to protecting the rights of ALL citizens, regardless of political affiliation or social standing.”
The Leader of the Opposition says that Belizeans have a collective responsibility to remain informed, engaged, and vigilant.
