By Aaron Humes: Moses “Shyne” Barrow has asked in the House of Representatives why “the price of gas continues to be so high in Belize, despite the fact that gas prices have been falling for more than two years globally?”
In response, Prime Minister John Briceño made note that Belize’s is the fastest growing economy in the region except for Guyana, which produces petroleum on a greater scale than Belize does.
The taxes collected from fuel imports and elsewhere are reinvested in the economy, the P.M. said, resulting in lower unemployment, higher wages, and greater opportunity and this is the “big picture” that the Government is hoping everyone sees.
It’s about prudent fiscal management of revenue and expenditure, the P.M. continued, pointing to the rollout of free education, National Health Insurance, (NHI) and providing house lots and houses: “We have been able to engender confidence in the present and hope in the future.”
