By Zoila Palma: Today, Leader of the Opposition Tracy Panton expressed solidarity with the Belize Bus Association (BBA) as the association blocked roads in Northern Belize in protest.
“The voices of our people must be heard on the issues that matter most, those that directly impact our lives and livelihoods. The current protests, including the blocking of bridges and burning of tires, are not acts of disorder for the sake of disruption. They are symbols of frustration, signals of the mounting pressures Belizeans face every single day. If we remain silent, if we remain passive, those pressures will only intensify,” Panton said.
“Repeated efforts to engage in constructive dialogue with the relevant ministries and departments have not yielded meaningful solutions. Instead, we have witnessed an unacceptable attempt to deflect blame onto our independent bus operators. This is outrageous! If the government is truly serious about addressing the concerns of the people, then it must act decisively, utilizing the economic tools at its disposal to reduce risk, ease burdens, and protect the most vulnerable,” Panton added.
Panton says that this fight is “of every Belizean who depends on public transportation:
* To get to work
* To send their children to school
* To access healthcare
* To stay connected with family and community across districts.
Enough is enough!”
Panton says that she joins all Belizeans in demanding solutions.
