By Zoila Palma: Leader of the Opposition, Tracy Panton, has expressed concern over recent developments in Venezuela, warning that actions by major powers could have serious implications for smaller nations.
During an interview with 7News Belize, Panton acknowledged the close relationship between Belize and the United States, “The U.S. is an important ally for Belize, and we often see that when the U.S. sneezes, Belize catches a cold.”
“We are in a very precarious situation. Belize continues to deal with the territorial threat from Guatemala,” she said, adding that Belize must remain consistent in defending core values on the international stage. She emphasized that those values include respect for sovereignty, self-determination and international law.
Panton reiterated “We believe in international law.”
“We certainly cannot countenance that any country, any sovereign nation, should have to be subject to that kind of… bullying by a superpower,” she said.
